Memorial Gymnasium

Home to the Black Bear volleyball program, Memorial Gymnasium, or "The Pit" as fans and opponents have aptly named it, offers great views of the on-court action and provides a loud and raucous atmosphere for UMaine's home matches. The home court for UMaine volleyball was recently refurbished during a $1.2 million renovation of Memorial Gym, and a new locker room facility for women's volleyball has also been added.

The Pit also serves as a practice facility for the men's and women's basketball teams, and was the home for those two teams prior to 1988. In the 1970's, The Pit was rated one of the country's most intimidating home courts by Sports Illustrated.

Memorial Gymnasium also houses several administrative and support offices for the Athletic Department, including the Mike Kessock Sports Medicine Center, the Sam Sezak Learning Center, the Latti Fitness Center, the Stanley M. Wallace Pool, and the offices of the athletic director. Offices for men's and women's basketball, softball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's swimming, and field hockey are also located in Memorial Gym.

Memorial Gymnasium is dedicated to the fourty-one alumni who were killed in World War I, and anchors the northern end of the campus Mall.
