2011-2012 Black Bears in the Community - Update!
January
Members of the football, women's swimming & diving, soccer and track teams volunteered at the annual "Diversity Day" held at the Orono/Old Town YMCA on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They led the team building station and facilitiated activities that promoted communication and treating others with respect.
December
The student-athlete advisory committee collected toys and donations for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program at all home events. They collected $850 and over 100 toys that were distributed to children in the greater Bangor area.
The women's ice hockey team raised money to send gift boxes to children as part of the Operation Christmas Child project.
Male Athletes Against Violence and members of the women’s soccer team visited 8th graders at the Dr. Lewis Libby School in Milford to talk about bullying and the importance of treating each other with respect. The group acted out various skits to convey their message and then led small group discussions. November
November 25th – The men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted a free clinic for youth in grades 1-8.
October
October 31st – The men’s basketball team visited the Bangor Mall on Halloween to hand out candy to local children.
September
September 11th – The baseball team volunteered at the 5th
annual Pedal the Penobscot bike race in Bangor. The race
supports the Bangor Land Trust which secures public access to local
land, conserves wildlife habitat and maintains trails.
September 18th - The swimming and diving and cross country teams
helped at the Black Bear Attack Adventure Race. Members of
both teams will served as support on the course and monitored
various obstacles. All proceeds from the race
benefited stophazing.org which is a national organization
committed to preventing hazing.
September 24th - The baseball and men’s and women’s
swimming and diving teams participated in the Old Town’s
Riverfest Celebration.
September 24th – Men’s and Women’s basketball teams hosted a free clinic for youth in grades 1-8.
September 25th – over 100 student-athletes from the track, swim, baseball and basketball teams volunteered at the 3rd annual Cub Tracks Youth Triathlon held at the University of Maine.
Ongoing Projects:
Warm Heads, Warm Hearts is a new project within the athletic department. Athletes are voluntarily learning how to knit in order to make hats for cancer patients throughout the state of Maine. To learn more about the project, visit the Black Bears in the Community facebook page.
ONGOING:
College for Every Student: 15 student athletes have volunteered to be part of the Black Bear Mentors program sponsored by UMaine’s Bodwell Center for Volunteerism. These student-athletes have committed to visiting and mentoring students at the Dr. Lewis Libby School in Milford for the entire school year.
