ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine is once again accepting nominations for its Sports Hall of Fame. Nomination forms may be downloaded by clicking the link below. Nominations are due April 5, 2013.
The Hall of Fame was established in the mid-80’s in order to recognize former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters for their high achievements and contributions to the success of Maine Athletics. Since 1986, 175 individuals have been honored with induction into the Hall of Fame.
The criteria for selection into the Hall of Fame is achievement in the athletic program, but other factors are also considered. They include character, leadership and integrity, as well as non-athletic service to the University community and achievement later in life. Nominees must be unaffiliated from the University of Maine for five years. The 2012 class included former women’s basketball standout Kim Corbitt (2005), men’s basketball’s Charlie Goddard (1950), hockey star Steve Kariya (1999), track and field record-holder Richard Nason (1964) and softball great Michelle Puls (1998).

2012 Hall of Fame Class
ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine announced today
that it has selected five former student-athletes for induction
into the 2012 Sports Hall of Fame. Former women’s basketball
standout Kim Corbitt (2005), men’s basketball’s Charlie
Goddard (1950), hockey star Steve Kariya (1999), track and field
record-holder Richard Nason (1964) and softball great Michelle Puls
(1998) will be inducted in the 2012 class. The group will be
inducted in a ceremony at Wells Conference Center on Friday, Sept.
28.
Corbitt was captain of the women’s basketball team during
the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. She was named America East Player
of the Year in 2004-05, after winning America East Defensive Player
of the Year honors in 2002-03 and 2003-04. She was an America East
Third Team selection during the 2002-03 season. Corbitt led the
team in assists for three consecutive seasons from 2002-2005. She
was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2003-04 and 2004-05.
Following graduation, she served as an assistant coach for the
Black Bears during the 2005-06 season.
Goddard was captain of the men’s basketball team in 1948-49
and 1949-50. He led the team in scoring, both total points and
average, in both 1948-49 and 1949-50. Goddard was an All-State
selection in 1949-50. In addition, he was named to the All-Yankee
Conference First Team in 1949-50.
Kariya, a 1999 Hobey Baker Award Finalist, led Maine to its second
NCAA National Championship in men’s ice hockey in 1999. A
two-year captain, he was a First Team All-American, a Hockey East
First Team selection and named to the Hockey East All-Tournament
Team. Kariya earned the Hockey East Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship
Award in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He ranks tied for sixth on
Maine’s All-Time scoring list with 78 goals and 109 assists
for 187 career points in 150 games. Kariya also excelled in the
classroom. He was named a CoSIDA All-District selection in 1998 and
1999. He was a three-time Hockey East Academic Honor Roll
selection.
Nason was the Maine State Champion in 1961 in the discus and
hammer and in the hammer in 1964. He was the Yankee Conference
Champion in the hammer in 1963 and 1964. He still holds the
University of Maine record for the 16 pound hammer with a 187.7
½ throw in 1964, which was the third best throw in the
nation that year. He also holds the University of Maine record for
the 35 pound weight with a throw of 61’ ¼ .
Puls was named the America East Softball Player of the Year in
1997 and 1998. At the time of her graduation, she held six school
records, including: career games played (178), career at-bats
(527), singles season runs scored (39), career runs scored (105),
career hits (184), and doubles in a season (16). She earned a spot
on the 1998 America East All-Tournament Team. Following graduation,
Puls played professionally for the Akron Racers in 1999.
The five will be inducted on Friday, September 28, 2012. There
will be a reception in the Hall of Fame lobby in the Memorial Gym
beginning at 6 PM. Dinner will follow at Wells Conference Center at
7 PM followed by the induction. The honorees will be recognized at
halftime of the Maine football game against Villanova the following
day. Tickets for the Hall of Fame banquet are $40 and are available
