Maine Student-Athletes Post 3.11 America East GPA for 2010-2011 Academic Year

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine was one of six schools to post a 3.00 grade point average or better in the 2010–11 America East Academic Cup, announced today by the America East Conference. The Academic Cup, established by the America East Board of Directors in 1995, is presented to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest grade point averages during that academic year.

Vermont won the 2010–11 Academic Cup with a 3.17 GPA. The five other schools to post a 3.00 grade point average or higher were Hartford (3.13), New Hampshire (3.13), Maine (3.11), Boston University (3.11) and Binghamton (3.10).

America East also honored all teams with the highest GPA in their respective sports. The Maine women’s cross country team finished with a 3.60 team grade point average to earn the distinction.

Sixty-six percent of the league’s teams (98-of-149) had GPA’s of 3.0 or better. In addition, the league’s nearly 3,200 student-athletes compiled an impressive 3.07 cumulative average during the 2010-2011 season.

The Black Bears have twice won the America East Academic Cup. Maine won the 2004 Academic Cup and were named co-champions in 2007.

The overall institutional grade-point averages were calculated by dividing each student-athlete’s quality points by the total credits completed for the grade.

America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the Academic Cup, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 21 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors. Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes himself/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the conference recognizes all student-athletes who achieve at least a 3.0 GPA on its Academic Honor Roll with those achieving a 3.5 average or better receiving Commissioner’s Honor Roll status.
