Kelly Newton and Andrew Rogers Win M Club Dean Smith Awards

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine announced on Sunday that Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) of the field hockey team and Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) of the men’s basketball team are the recipients of the 2012 “M” Club Dean Smith Awards. The awards are presented annually to the top male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletic achievement along with citizenship and community service.

Kelly Newton is one of the best field hockey players in Maine history. In the classroom, she is a three-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and has also been named to the America East Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. Newton has earned a spot on the Dean’s List.  
 
On the field, Newton’s accomplishments are unequalled. She holds seven University of Maine field hockey scoring records including: points in a career (163), goals in a career (57), assists in a career (49), points in a season (51), assists in a season (25), points in a game (10) and assists in a game (3). This past season, she was named a Longstretch/NFHCA Third Team All-American and Women’sFieldHockey.com Third Team All-American. She was named to the All-Northeast Region First Team and was a unanimous selection to the America East First Team. She participated in the 2011 NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star game and was a two-time America East Player of the Week and also earned ECAC Player of the Week honors.

As a junior in 2010, Newton was named the America East Offensive Player of the Year. She was also named a unanimous selection to the America East First Team along with being named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-American Third Team and the Women’sFieldHockey.com All-America Third Team. She was also selected to the All-Northeast First Team. As a sophomore, Newton was also an America East First Team selection and received Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team honors. As a freshman, Newton was named the America East Rookie of the Year. She also earned a spot on the America East First Team and the America East All-Rookie Team. She was selected to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region First Team.

Newton is also active in the UMaine community. She has participated in television commercials and radio ads with the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Maine Campaign. She has also taken part in a team fundraiser, ‘Stick it to Cancer.’ She has volunteered at the American Red Cross Blood Drive and assisted at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at the Bangor Mall.

Rogers is Maine’s starting point guard. Just this past week Rogers was named to the CoSIDA District I All-Academic First Team and will now be played on the national ballot. He is a three-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and has also been named to the America East Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll three times. Rogers is a two-time America East All-Academic selection and has been named to the NABC Honors Court. Rogers was selected to Senior Skulls, which is approximately the top one percent of males in the senior class.

On the court, Rogers has played in 108 career games, making 25 starts. He has dished out 260 career assists. Rogers ranks fourth in America East with 4.0 assists per game and is tops in the conference with a 3.2 assist-to-turnover radio. He ranks fifth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio.

The “M” Club Dean Smith Award was first presented as the “M” Club Scholarship Award in 1980. The award was renamed to honor Dean Smith in 1993. Dean Smith was a recipient of the Walter Byers Award presented by the NCAA. Smith combined the top grade-point average among senior electrical engineering majors with the NAC scoring title as the captain of the 1989-90 men’s basketball team.

In addition, the University of Maine Athletic Department named its fifth annual “Team Maine” representing the top sophomore, junior or senior achieving the highest grade point average for the calendar year 2011. Representing “Team Maine” for 2011 are:
