Black Bear Sports Properties Secures New Five-Year Relationship with Blueberry Broadcasting, Waterfront Communications
Black Bear Sports Properties, a property of Learfield Sports and the exclusive multimedia rights holder for University of Maine Athletics, announced today that Blueberry Broadcasting in Bangor/Augusta and Waterfront Communications in Bangor have entered into respective, five-year agreements to be radio affiliates of the Black Bear Sports Network starting this fall.

Men's and Women's Cross Country, Field Hockey and Women's Soccer Honored for Multi-Year APR Scores
The University of Maine men’s and women’s cross country teams, field hockey team and women's soccer squad were two of more than 950 NCAA Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA on Wednesday, June 5 for earning Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent plus ties in each sport.

New Balance Field House Making Progress
ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine athletics department is in the first phase of a construction project on the Field House and Memorial Gym. The first phase will focus on a renovation of the Field House and the construction of a new entry way on the west side of the building. The Field House will be renamed the “New Balance Field House” in recognition of a $5 Million gift from New Balance.

Maine Announces 2013 Hall of Fame Class
ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine announced today that it has selected six former student-athletes for induction into the 2013 University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame. Former men’s basketball standout Francois Bouchard (1994), hockey star Jack Capuano (1989), track and field record holder Gerard LaFlamme, swimming standout Susan Herrick Lizzotte (1999), football player Carleton “Speed” Merritt (1924) and baseball All-American Chad White (1993) are the newest selections.

Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement
The University of Maine announced on Thursday that 250 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Monday, March 25, 2013. One-hundred sixty five student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2012 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Eighty-five first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. Brittany Ott and Mark Nemec Earn 2013 M Club Dean Smith Awards as Top Scholar-Athletes
The University of Maine announced on Monday that Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) of the women’s hockey team and Mark Nemec (Rouses Point, N.Y.) of the men’s ice hockey team are the recipients of the 2013 “M” Club Dean Smith Awards. Maine Places Highest Percentage of Student-Athletes on America East Fall Academic Honor Roll
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Maine had the highest percentage of its fall student-athletes named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll, released on Friday, Feb. 1. The Black Bears had 78.1 percent of its fall student-athletes honored. Maine had 42 of those student-athletes earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

UMaine Announces 2012 Sports Hall of Fame Class
The University of Maine announced today that it has selected five former student-athletes for induction into the 2012 Sports Hall of Fame. Maine Announces Changes in Athletic Training
University of Maine Director of Athletics Steve Abbott has announced several changes to the athletic training staff. Paul Culina, who has been at the University of Maine for the past 18 years, becomes the Director of Men’s and Women’s Hockey Operations and will serve as athletic trainer for the men’s ice hockey team. Ryan Taylor has been named Head Athletic Trainer, while Michelle Bowers and Kelleigh O’Neill join the staff as assistant athletic trainers.

Maine Names Seth Woodcock Associate AD for Development
The University of Maine has named Seth Woodcock as the new Associate Athletic Director for Development. Woodcock, who worked in development at Maine Medical Center for the past nine years, will assume the role as the lead major gift fundraiser for athletics at the University of Maine.

Maine Student-Athletes Post 3.04 GPA
The University of Maine was one of seven America East schools to post a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the 2011–2012 year. The announcement was made at the America East Conference annual meetings in Annapolis, Md. The Black Bears finished the year with a 3.04 grade point average.

Bickford, Sullivan Named to 2012 Academic All-District First Team
University of Maine swimmer Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) and men's ice hockey standout Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) have been named to the Capital One 2012 Academic All-District Men's At-Large First Team. Both will now be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Both student-athletes are sophomores.

Benefit for Leroy Patterson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Engineers Without Borders Presented $25,000 Grant from Newman's Own Foundation
Engineers Without Borders, in partnership with University at Maine, received the top grant of $25,000. Earth Day Southern Tier working with Binghamton University's SUNY VINES (Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments) received $15,000. Two student group/non-profit partnerships tied for the third-place grant. Both Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, who partnered with University of Albany's Reclassifying All Children Equally (R.A.C.E.), and Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports who partnered with University of Vermont's Adaptive Sports, will receive a $10,000 grant from Newman's Own Foundation. In total, over $100,000 was awarded to nonprofits throughout the tournament.

Maine Has Highest Percentage of Student-Athletes Named to America East Fall Academic Honor Roll
Approximately 63 percent of America East student-athletes competing in fall sports totaling 632 participants earned America East Honor Roll distinction after achieving semester grade-point averages (GPA) of 3.00 or higher. Over half of those student-athletes and 322 total earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the fall semester with a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Maine had the highest percentage of fall student-athletes named to the honor roll as 74.2 percent achieved a 3.00 GPA or higher.

MAAV Members Speak to Local 8th Grade Students
Members of the Male Athletes Against Violence peer education group and two women's soccer players visited the 8th graders at the Dr. Lewis S. Libby school in Milford earlier this week. They talked to over 75 8th graders about bullying and the importance of treating each other with respect. The student-athletes performed two skits to demonstrate how to get help if you are being bullied and then led small group discussions with each class.

Maine to Hold Pep Rally on Thursday
The University of Maine is planning a Thursday, Nov. 10 pep rally in support of the Black Bear football team. It is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Memorial Union's Maine Marketplace. The marching band and cheerleaders will perform in the atrium outside the UMaine bookstore, while speakers including President Paul Ferguson and football coach Jack Cosgrove will fire up the crowd as the Black Bears move toward their last home game of the regular season, Saturday Nov. 12 at 12:30 p.m. against UMass.

Maine Honored for Graduation Success Rate
The NCAA released its Graduation Success Rate today and over 80 percent of student-athletes are graduating within six years of enrolling in college. In addition, America East student-athletes are graduating at a higher rate than overall Division I student-athletes. Maine had five teams honored for perfect 100 scores.

A total of 137 University of Maine student-athletes were among the 1,282 named to the 2011 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade point averages of 3.0 or better. The University of Maine was one of six schools to post a 3.00 grade point average or better in the 2010–11 America East Academic Cup, announced today by the America East Conference. The Academic Cup, established by the America East Board of Directors in 1995, is presented to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest grade point averages during that academic year.

Black Bear Sports Properties (BBSP), University of Maine’s exclusive athletics multimedia rights partner, today announced an extension of their official flagship radio partnership with Blueberry Broadcasting, LLC. As a result of the new agreement, Bangor’s WKSQ 94.5 FM will broadcast all football and men’s hockey games and daily radio shows beginning this fall. The station will also be home for any men’s or women’s basketball conflicts. Additionally, WAEI 910 AM (Bangor) will carry football, men’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball and select baseball broadcasts. WAEI will carry coaches’ shows and daily shows for football and men’s hockey as well.

Black Bear Mentors Participate in Service Day
On Monday, April 4th and Wednesday, April 6th the Black Bear Mentors participated in service projects with their mentees at the Dr. Lewis S. Libby. The student-athlete mentors and their mentees made soup kits to deliver to the Crossroads Resource Center in Old Town. Each soup kit can feed up to 12 people.

Strength and Conditioning Clinic
The University of Maine is holding a Speed, Strength and Conditioning Clinic on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Registration will take place at 7 AM and the clinic will run 8:00 AM to 12 Noon at the Latti Fitness Center. The University of Maine announced on Sunday that Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass.) of the cross country and women’s track and field team and Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) of the men’s swimming team are the recipients of the 2011 “M” Club Dean Smith Awards. The awards are presented to the male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletic achievement along with citizenship and community service.

Maine Places Highest Percentage of Student-Athletes on America East Fall Academic Honor Roll
A record 634 student-athletes have been named to the 2010 Fall America East Academic Honor Roll. It is the highest number of student-athletes on the fall honor roll since its induction during the 1988-89 year. Student-athletes had to earn grade point averages of 3.0 or higher last semester to receive this recognition. Of those student-athletes, 331 earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the fall semester with grade point averages of 3.50 or higher.

Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement
he University of Maine announced on Wednesday that 239 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011. One-hundred seventy four student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2010 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-five first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 239, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.

Jim Churchill and Pete Warner Honored by NSSA
Two University of Maine media members were recently honored by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Jim Churchill, who broadcasts for the Black Bears Sports Network, was named the Co-Sportscaster of the Year in Maine, while Pete Warner, who covers four Black Bear beats for the Bangor Daily News, was named Sportswriter of the Year.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to Collect Toys for Tots
ORONO, Maine -- The student-athlete advisory committee will be helping the U.S. Marine Corps collect toys for the annual Toys for Tots campaign. Fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to Alfond Arena during the month of December. The committee will be collecting donations at the following events: Men’s Basketball on 12/4, 12/6 and 12/12, Men’s Hockey on 12/10 and 12/12 and Women’s Hockey on 12/10 and 12/11.

Maine Announces 2010 Hall of Fame Class
Former mens ice hockey goalie Mike Dunham and former womens basketball standout Heather Ernest highlight the 2010 University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame class which will be inducted on September 24. Dunham 93 was part of a goaltending duo that led Maine to its first-ever national championship in mens ice hockey during the 19921993 season. He is joined in the 2010 class by Ken Black 35, who excelled in track and cross country, former mens soccer coach and assistant athletic director Jim Dyer, Ernest 04, baseball captain Jeff Paul 84 and football standout Marcus Williams 05.

175 Maine Student-Athletes Named to America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll
ORONO, Maine--A total of 175 University of Maine student-athletes were among the 1,717 named to the 2010 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Ninety (90) of the 150 Black Bear student-athletes were named to the Commissioners Honor Roll for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Maine Student-Athletes Post 3.09 GPA for 2009-2010 Academic Year
The University of Maine was one of seven schools to post a 3.00 grade point average or better in the 200910 America East Academic Cup, announced today by the America East Conference. The Academic Cup, established by the America East Board of Directors in 1995, is presented to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest grade point averages during that academic year.
