Late Maine Rally Falls Just Short at Providence

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Providence College on Friday night at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period of play and despite a valiant effort, the Black Bears were unable to come back. Maine sees its six-game winning streak snapped and falls to 16-9-3 on the season and 11-8-2 in Hockey East play. Providence improves to 11-14-2 overall and 9-10-1 in conference play.
#12 Men's Ice Hockey Travels to Providence and #7 UMass Lowell

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team puts its six-game winning streak on the line when it hits the road for a pair of Hockey East games this weekend. The Black Bears face Providence on Friday night, before traveling to UMass Lowell on Saturday. Providence enters the game with a mark of 10-14-2 overall and 8-10-1 in Hockey East play. UMass Lowell is one of the biggest surprised in college hockey this season as they are currently ranked seventh in the nation and have a record of 18-7-0, 13-6-0 in Hockey East play.
Softball Falls to USF, 8-1

The Black Bears found themselves in an early hole, down 4-0 after the first inning to the University of South Florida, and could not fight back, falling 8-1 in the second game of an opening day doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) went 2-for-3 for Maine while Katlin Norton (South Portland, Maine) scored the Black Bears' lone run.
Softball Drops Season Opener in Extra Innings to Illinois St.

The University of Maine softball team failed to hold a 4-3 lead with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Illinois St. was able to hit a two-out home run to tie things up and eventually take the 2012 season opener 5-4 in extra innings. Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) belted two solo home runs to lead the Maine offensive attack as the sophomore finished the day 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs, two walks and a pair of roundtrippers.
Men's Basketball Hosts Albany on Saturday

The University of Maine men's basketball team hosts Albany at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Alfond Arena. The game could have huge seeding implications for the America East Tournament which is just three weeks away.

The University of Maine women’s basketball team (6-18, 3-8 America East) takes to the road to battle the current #2 team in America East in the Albany Great Danes (16-9, 10-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Brittany Ott
Ott had a stellar weekend in net for Maine, earning a 2-0 record. She allowed only one goal in Saturday’s game against Vermont while stopping 18 of 19 shots and earned her third shutout of the season on Sunday, stopping all 25 shots she faced. With the combined 43 saves on 44 shots, she earned a .977 save percentage for the two games.
Spencer Abbott
Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) scored two goals and dished out five assists in Maine's weekend sweep of Alabama-Huntsville. On Friday night he forced overtime with his goal at 19:14 of the third period. He was named Athletic Republic Hockey East Player of the Week for his performance. Abbott leads Maine and the nation in scoring with 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points.
