Higgins Lifts Maine Past Alabama-Huntsville in Overtime

Stu Higgins (Troy, Mich.) scored 59 seconds into overtime as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 15-8-3 on the season with the win. Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) had a goal and two assists for the Black Bears in the game.
Women's Basketball Falls at UMBC

The University of Maine women’s basketball team held tight to UMBC throughout the first half but fell in the end by a score of 66-44. The loss slips Maine back to 6-17 and 3-7 in league play while the Retrievers improve to 12-12 and 6-5 in America East play. Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) led the Black Bears with nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds as she was named Maine’s America East Player of the Game.
Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine announced on Wednesday that 243 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012. One-hundred seventy five student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2011 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-eight first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 243, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.

The University of Maine women’s basketball team (6-16, 3-6 America East) looks for its second win in a row when it travels to take on UMBC (11-12, 5-5) on Saturday afternoon.
Samantha Baranowski
Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) averaged 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds over the past week including a career-high 20 point performance in Maine's win over Binghamton. The senior tri-captain has now tallied double-figures in six-straight games while averaging 13.8 points per game in conference action.
Dan Sullivan
Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) went 2-0-0 on the week as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team swept #2 Boston University. He finished with a 1.50 goals against average and a .957 save percentage. For his efforts, Sullivan was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week. He made a career-high 38 saves in the win on Saturday night.
