Baseball Extends Winning Streak to 10 Games with Doubleheader Sweep

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of Hartford on a wet Saturday evening in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears won the first game 13-4, before recording a 12-2 victory in the second game. Maine improves to 25-21 on the season with the wins and moves to 14-5 in America East play. Hartford falls to 4-40-1 overall and 1-17 in conference play. 

In the first game, Hartford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brendan Behm drew a walk and scored when Chirs Suchy doubled to the right center field fence.

Maine answered in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) walked, stole second and scored when Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) singled to center field.

The Black Bears took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning with three runs. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled through the right side. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) followed with a single to right field. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario). Calbick scored on a Taylor Lewis (Montville., Conn.) sacrifice fly. Whitten scored the second run of the inning when Fransoso singled to left field. Fransoso scored when Martin singled to center.

Hartford cut into the lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Behm walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Suchy doubled.

Maine added four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled to center field and Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) followed and reached on an error. Calbick was hit to load the bases. Whitten followed and was also hit, driving in Justin Leisenheimer. Both Ian Leisenheimer and Calbick scored when Black singled to center field. Whitten scored the fourth run of the inning when Martin hit his third RBI single of the game.

The Hawks added a run in the top of the fourth when Rodger Wilmot was hit and scored when Brian Hunter singled.

The Black Bears tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Justin Leisenheimer drew a walk and scored when Whitten homered over the right center field fence. For Whitten, it was his fifth homer of the season, which tied him with Justin Leisenheimer for the team lead. Black walked and scored on a Fransoso single.

Maine added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Leisenheimer singled and Whitten was hit. Both runners scored when Lewis singled through the right side.

Hartford got a run in the top of the seventh inning. Alex Bulger doubled down the left field line and scored on a wild pitch.

Keith Bilodeau (Bourne, Mass.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears and went five innings. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits. He struck out four batters and improves to 8-2 on the season. He was replaced by Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) who pitched a scoreless inning. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) pitched the seventh and allowed one unearned run.

Hartford starter Ryan Lukach went 1.2 innings on the mound. He allowed four runs on five hits. He picks up the loss and falls to 0-4 on the season. He was replaced by Tyler Corsi. Corsi went two innings and allowed seven runs, five of which were earned, on five hits. He struck out a pair. Charlie Moran went 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Anthony Mannello went an inning and allowed a hit.

In the second game, Maine jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lewis drew a walk, stole second and Martin homered to right field. Justin Leisenheimer doubled to left field. He scored on an error after Calbick singled to right field. Whitten followed and drew a walk. Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, Maine) doubled to left field scoring Calbick.

Maine continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the second inning. Fransoso doubled to left field, moved to third on a Martin singled and scored when Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) doubled over the head of the centerfielder. Martin scored when Justin Leisenheimer flew out to the right fielder.

Maine added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Thibodeau and Black had back-to-back hits to left field. Lewis followed with a home run over the right center field fence. For Lewis, it was his third homer of the season. Fransoso followed with his fourth home run of the season, giving Maine a 10-0 lead in the third inning.

Calbick reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Whitten doubled to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Whitten scored when Thibodeau singled to left field. For Thibodeau, it was his third hit of the game.

Hartford got on the board in the top of the ninth inning. Chris Suchy drew a walk and Matt Walker was hit. Kudernatsch drew a base on balls to load the bases. Rodger Wilmot followed with a single to center field driving in both Suchy and Walker. 

Maine pitcher Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start and went eight innings. He allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out five. He improves to 6-4 on the season. Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y.) pitched the ninth and allowed two runs on one hit. 

Hunter Englehart got the start on the mound for the Hawks. He went 2.1 innings and allowed 10 runs, eight of which were earned, on 11 hits. He falls to 0-6 on the season. He was replaced by Vincent Fiore who went 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Brian Rice relieved Fiore and pitched two scoreless innings. 

The two teams finish their three-game America East series on Sunday, May 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
