Baseball Downs Florida A&M 5-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team defeated Florida A&M 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Tallahassee, Fla. Maine evens its record to 2-2 on the season with the victory. 


The Black Bears got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) drove in Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) who was hit by a pitch. 


The Black Bears added a run in third inning when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) reached on an error and scored when Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled. Maine added a run in the fourth inning when Whitten singled to center field and scored on a Black single. 


Florida A&M got a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jarryd Reid doubled and scored on a hit by Andrew Thomas. 


Ian Leisenehimer scored the fourth run of the game for the Black Bears in the top of the sixth inning. He singled to shortstop and scored when Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) reached on an fielder's choice. Maine capped the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) drew a walk. Sam Balanzo (Portland, Maine) pinch ran for him and scored when Ian Leisenheimer reached on an error. 


Florida A&M added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 5-3 final. 


D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) made his first career start in the game and went 4.1 innings. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out three. Voisine picks up the win of the Black Bears. Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) relieved Voisine. He went 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out a career-high eight. 


Heath Blackburn was one of our pitchers for Florida A&M. He went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs, just one of which was earned, on five hits. He falls to 0-3 on the season. 


The Black Bears face Florida A&M again tomorrow in Tallahassee, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
