Coughlin Gem Leads Baseball Past Bowling Green 6-1
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) pitched a complete game gem as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Bowling Green State University 6-1 on Saturday morning in Winter Haven, Fla. Coughlin allowed just one run on six hits and improved to 1-1 on the season. Maine improves to 5-7 on the campaign.
Maine got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) walked and then advanced to second on a balk. He scored when Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) singled to left field. Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) doubled putting runners on second and third. Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) drove home Patzalek when he doubled. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) drove in Leisenheimer with a single. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) plated the fourth run of the inning when he singled to left field scoring Silva.
Bowling Green got its lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Jeremy Shay doubled to left field and scored when Alex Davison singled.
Maine added to its lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) pinch hit for Eric White and reached on an error. He scored when Justin Leisenheimer hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine extended its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Calbick walked and scored when Troy Black singled through the right side.
Coughlin went all nine innings and allowed one run on six hits. He struck out seven batters in the game without walking a batter. He fanned the side in the top of the ninth inning to end the game. He moves to 1-1 on the season.
Bowling Green used four pitchers in the contest. Andrew Lacinak got the start and went 3.1 innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. He picked up the loss and fell to 0-1 on the season. He was replaced by Ben Singer who went 2.1 innings. He allowed a pair of runs on four hits. Jason Link threw 1.1 innings and surrendered one hit. Nick Bruns pitched the final inning.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, March 11 when it plays its final game of the 2012 spring trip in Florida. The Black Bears will face Fairfield at 10 AM.
