Baseball Picks up Win at Bryant, 5-3
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The University of Maine baseball team picked up their seventh win of the season today with a 5-3 victory over Bryant University. The Black Bears' record now stands at 7-12 while the Bulldogs drop to 9-10. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) went 4-for-5 at the plate for Maine, scoring two runs while Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) also went 4-for-5 with an RBI.
Through the first three innings of play, a pitchers duel ensued between Maine pitcher Steve Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) and Bryant pitcher Peter Kelich. Perakslis surrendered only three hits while striking out two batters and not walking a batter. Kelich had also only given up three hits, striking out three and not walking a batter.
In the top of the fourth inning, Alex Calbick got things rolling for Maine with a leadoff single through the right side. After Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Calbick to third and Leisenheimer to second base. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) then drove in the game's first run after singling up the middle, also advancing Leisenheimer to third. He would then come in to score after Scott Heath knocked a single through the right side. Patzalek would advance to second on the play. With the bases loaded and two outs, Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) was able to draw a walk, bringing Patzalek in from third and giving the Black Bears a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs were quick to respond in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Delponte reached on a leadoff single, followed by another single through the right side by Jamie Skagerland, sending Delponte to third. John Mullen drove Delponte in from third after sending a sacrifice fly to right field. Skagerland was able to move into scoring position on a wild pitch and come around to score when Connor Carignan singled through the right side. Carignan then advanced to third after Adam Claire knocked a single to right center. Carignan then came in to score after Carl Anderson laid a sacrifice bunt down, tying the game at 3-3. Perakslis was able to secure the third out of the inning after striking Dan Muscatello out.
The Black Bears took a 5-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning after Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, bringing in Alex Calbick and Justin Leisenheimer from second and third. Calbick reached on a leadoff double to right field while Leisenheimer was hit by a pitch. They both advanced a base when Tyler Patzalek singled up the middle.
Pitchers Steve Perakslis and Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) were able to do the rest, keeping the Bulldogs scoreless for the remainder of the game. Perakslis pitched a total of eight innings on the day, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Perakslis now has a record of 1-2 on the year. Coughlin picked up his second save of the year after pitching a perfect bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts. Peter Kelich picked up the loss for Bryant after throwing 6.1 innings, surrendering 11 hits and five runs, three of which were earned. He also walked two and struck out four. Kelichs' record now stands at 3-2.
The Black Bears will conclude the three game series with Bryant with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. Game one is set to start at 12:30 p.m. while game two will start at 3:30 p.m.
