Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va.-- The University of Maine baseball team completed its weekend sweep at Norfolk State, defeating the Spartans 9-1 on Sunday afternoon. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI, while Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) went 2-for-5 with four RBI. Maine improves to 11-14 on the season with the win.

Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Patzalek singled and Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) followed with a single as well. Both runners scored when Black singled.

The Black Bears added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) reached on an error. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) drew a walk. Gay scored when Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) doubled. Whitten scored on a Patzalek single.

Maine added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled and stole third base. He scored when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly.

Norfolk State got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Cameron Day walked and scored when Shane Hoggard singled to center field.

The Black Bears capped the scoring with three runs in the ninth inning. Patzalek singled through the left side. Calbick reached on an error and Patzalek moved to third base. Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) drew a walk. Black followed with his second two-run single of the game. Justin Leisenheimer scored on an error.

D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) went seven inning on the mound. He allowed one run on four hits. He improves to 2-0 on the season. He was replaced by Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) who pitched the final two innings. He allowed just two hits.

Justin Bhatti went five innings for NSU. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits. He was replaced by Richie Salter who went the final four innings. He allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits.

The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they host Husson at 5 PM.
