Whitten's Arm, Bat Lead Black Bears Past Colby

The University of Maine baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 5-1 win over Colby on Tuesday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 17-14 on the season, while Colby falls to 9-10. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) scored a run, drove in two and also got the win on the mound for the Black Bears.

Maine opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With two out, Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled to third base. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled up the middle and Leisenheimer advanced to third base. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario), the reigning America East Player of the Week, drove home Leisenheimer when a single to center field.

Maine added to its lead in the top of the second inning. Fran Whitten drew a walk and advanced to second when Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled to center field. Whitten scored when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) reached on a fielder's choice.

Colby got on the board in the top of the third inning. Nikolas Atsalis singled to center, stole second and third base and scored when Devlin McConnell grounded out.

Maine answered in the bottom of the frame. Heath dropped down a bunt and moved to second when Patzalek was hit. He scored on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) single through the right side.  Patzalek scored when Whitten reached on a fielder's choice.

The Black Bears capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Heath reached on an error and scored when Whitten doubled off the center field fence.

Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) got the start, but was forced to leave the game while facing the second batter of the game with an injury. He was replaced by Whitten who went three innings and got the win. Whitten allowed one run on three hits while striking out three. He improves to 2-1 on the season. He was replaced by Eric White (Brewer, Maine) who went three innings and surrendered just one hit. White was replaced by Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) who pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) pitched the ninth for the Black Bears.

Connor Sullivan started for Colby and went six innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits. He falls to 0-3 on the season. He was replaced by Lucas Geoghegan who went 1.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on a pair of hits. Abhi Chandel and Brady Hesslein each pitched a third of an inning. 

Maine return to action on Saturday, April 14 when it hosts Hartford for a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM.
