Calbick Drives in Four as Maine Extends Winning Streak to 13 Games
The University of Maine baseball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with an 11-3 win over Hartford in the weekend finale. Maine improves to 20-14 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in America East play. Hartford falls to 8-25 overall, 1-5 in conference play. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) drove in four runs in the game for the Black Bears.
Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of first inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) led off the inning with a single to right center field and then stole second base. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) followed and singled to right field. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) lined a single over the head of the Hartford third baseman, giving Maine the 1-0 lead. Gay scored the second run of the inning for the Black Bears when Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) hit a sacrifice fly to straight away center field.
Hartford got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Andy Drexel drew a walk and Brian Hunter reached on a fielder's choice. Brady Sheetz was hit to load the bases. Brendan Behm drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run. Brian Estevez also walked with the bases jammed to knot the game at 2-2. Sheetz scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch to give the Hawks the 3-2 lead.
Maine regained the advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) and Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) had back-to-back singles. Troy Black (Misissauga, Ontario) reached on a bunt to load the bases. Fransoso singled to center field to drove home Whitten and tied the game at 3-3. Ian Leisenheimer reached on a fielder's choice. Justin Leisenhiemer and Troy Black both scored on an error on the play. Scott Heath then drew a walk to load the bases once again. Alex Calbick also drew a base on balls, driving home Fransoso to give Maine the 6-3 lead.
The Black Bears added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ian Leisenheimer and Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) were both hit. Calbick drove both runners home with a double to the left field fence.
Maine continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Justin Leisenheimer singled and then stole second base. He scored on an Ian Leisenheimer sacrifice fly. Fransoso and Gay both scored when Heath and Calbick were hit with the bases loaded.
Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start for the Black Bears on the mound. He went 3.1 innings surrendering just one hit, but three runs. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) replaced Gibbs. He went 3.2 innings to earn the victory. He allowed three hits while striking out two. He improves to 3-0 on the season. Fran Whitten pitched the final two innings for the Black Bears. He also allowed three hits and fanned a pair.
Sean Newcomb went five innings on the mound for Hartford. He allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out seven. He falls to 2-4 on the season. Freddy Andujar, who went a pair of innings, replaced him. He allowed two runs on one hit. Charlie Moran pitched the eighth for the Hawks and allowed three runs.
The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 18 when they host Bates College at 5 PM at Mahaney Diamond.
