Calbick Blast Leads Baseball Past Bates 10-3
Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) belted a three-run home run to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 10-3 win over Bates on Wednesday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. He finished the game with four RBI. The Black Bears extend their winning streak to 14 games with the victory. Maine improves to 21-14 on the season, while Bates falls to 15-13.
Maine opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) reached on an error and scored when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled to right field. Fran Whittten (Westborough, Mass.) doubled to right center field and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.), who replaced Heath, moved to third base. Calbick then belted a three-run home run over the right field fence. For Calbick, it was his fourth home run of the season.
Maine added five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) reached on an infield hit and advanced to second on an error. He went to third on a wild pitch. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) walked and then stole second base. Both runners scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled through a drawn in infield. Balzano scored when Calbick singled to right. Gay, who reached on an error, and Calbick, both scored when Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) doubled to deep right field.
Maine extended its lead to 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fransoso singled to right field and scored when Whitten singled through the left side.
Bates got on the board with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Kevin Davis singled through the right side and scored on an error. Burke scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. The Bobcats added a run in the top of the eighth inning. Mike Ciummei singled and scored when Jeffrey Gunn singled to right center.
Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) went four scoreless innings on the mound for the Black Bears. He picks up the win and improves to 2-0 on the season. He was replaced by D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.). He went two innings and allowed two hits. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) went two thirds of an inning for the Black Bears and allowed two unearned runs. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) went a third of an inning and retired the lone batter that he faced. Eric White (Brewer, Maine) pitched the eighth inning and allowed one run, while Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Chris Fusco got the start for Bates and pitched two scoreless innings. Dean Bonneau followed and also pitched a pair of innings. He allowed four unearned runs on three hits to pick up the loss. He falls to 2-1 on the season. He was one of six pitchers for the Bobcats.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when it tavels to Binghamton for an America East series. The Black Bears and Bearcats will play a pair of doubleheaders at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
