Maine Baseball Practices Outside on January 31

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team took advantage of the unusually warm weather and practiced outside at Mahaney Diamond on Thursday afternoon. The Black Bears, who typically practice inside the Mahaney Dome this time of year, practiced taking fly ball outside for the first time this year.

"Being able to get on Mahaney Diamond in January for a full team practice not only gives us a bonus day of quality practice, but also demonstrates how our state of the art facility can take the Northeast weather," said Maine head coach Steve Trimper.  "Although we can accomplish a lot in the Mahaney Dome and Mitchell Batting Pavilion, there are aspects of the game that need to be practiced outside. It sure is nice to get a few fly balls to our position players and work on relays and cuts before the first inning against Auburn in 2 weeks."

The Black Bears officially began practice last Friday.

Maine opens the 2013 season on Friday, Feb. 15 at Auburn. The Black Bears and Tigers will play a four-game series to open the season.
