Heath, Lawrence Lead Baseball Past Stetson 7-1

DeLAND, Fla -- Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) went 4-for-5 with four RBI as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Stetson 7-1 on Friday night in DeLand, Fla. Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) pitched eight strong innings to earn his first win in a Maine uniform. 


Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled to shortstop and then stole second base. He scored when Scott Heath singled through the right side. 


The Black Bears extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the eighth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) led off the inning with a singled up the middle and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) followed with a single to right field. Black scored the second run of the game when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice. Heath drove in his second run of the game with a single to right field, plating Balzano. 


Stetson got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. Konner Lutz singled and Brian Eggleston pinch ran for him. He scored when Tyler Babcock doubled. 


The Black Bears added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to put the game out of reach. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) was hit and he moved to second on a balk. Eric White (Brewer, Maine) reached on an error and Doran moved to third. He scored when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled. Gay reached on an error and White scored. Black and Gay both scored when Heath singled to right field. 


Tommy Lawrence recorded his second straight impressive outing for the Black Bears. He went eight innings and allowed just one run on eight hits. He struck out six Stetson batters without allowing a walk. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Black Bears. 


Josh Powers went seven innings for Stetson and allowed three runs on nine hits to suffer the loss. He was one of seven pitchers for the Hatters. 


Maine improves to 1-5 on the season, while Stetson falls to 2-3. 


The two teams will play game three of their three game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM.
