TALLAHASSEE, Fla -- The University of Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from Florida A&M on Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee, Fla. to extend its winning streak to four games. Maine won the first game 5-0 and took the second on 6-2. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the Maine offense as he went 5-for-9 on the day with three runs scored and three RBI. He also belted three doubles in the game.
Maine improves to 4-5 on the season with the wins, while Florida A & M falls to 0-6.
In the first game, Maine struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to left and then stole second base. Fransoso followed with a RBI double, scoring Gay. Fransoso scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) doubled.
The Black Bears added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled and stole second base. He scored when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled. Heath then stole second on scored on Calbick's second double of the game.
Maine capped the scoring in the top of the seventh inning. Fransoso doubled, his second of the game, and Heath followed with a RBI single.
Rookie Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went six innings and surrendered just two hits. He struck out five batters and improves to 1-0 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) went three innings in relief to earn the save.
David Duncan allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings for Florida A&M. He was replaced by Stephen Dollar, who allowed one run on three hits over three innings.
In the second game, Florida A&M jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Marlon Gibbs reached on an error and Ben Robinson followed with a double. Both runners scored an a RBI single by Michael Birdson.
Maine got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and scored when Fransoso doubled.
The Black Bears tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Gay walked and scored when Heath singled.
Maine took the lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) singled through the left side. Black followed with a single to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Gay reached on a fielder's choice. Balzano singled and Black scored. Balzano then stole second base. Gay scored when Fransoso singled. Calbick drove in two more runs with a single.
Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) got the start on the mound and pitched a complete game. He allowed two runs, just one of which was earned, on six hits. He struck out four batters without walking one. He improves to 1-1 on the season. Heath Blackburn went the distance for Florida A&M. He allowed six runs on 12 hits.
The two teams conclude their three-game series with a single game on Monday starting at 12 noon.
