Baseball Sweeps Weekly America East Awards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Maine baseball team swept the weekly America East baseball awards, announced on Monday, Feb. 25 by the conference. Senior captain Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) earned Player of the Week honors, while junior pitcher Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) was named Pitcher of the Week. Freshman pitcher Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) earned conference Rookie of the Week honors, as the Black Bears posted a 4-1 mark on the week.
Fransoso hit .500 last week with six runs scored and seven RBI. Five of his 11 hits were doubles and he finished a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Fransoso had a .520 on-base percentage and a .727 slugging percentage on the week. He had four multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit games. Fransoso belted two doubles and drove in a pair of runs in Maine's 16-4 win over Stetson on Saturday.
Lawrence pitched eight innings in Maine's 7-1 win over Stetson on Friday evening. He allowed just one run on eight hits. Lawrence struck out six batters in the game without walking anyone. In 15 innings pitched on the season, Lawrence has a 1.80 ERA with 10 strikeouts.
Fullmer pitched six innings in Maine's 5-0 win over Florida A&M on Sunday afternoon. He surrendered just two hits while striking out five batters in the combined shutout. Fullmer has yet to allow a run in nine innings on the mound this season.
Maine's game scheduled for Monday afternoon against Florida A&M was rained out. The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, March 2 when they face Western Michigan at 2 PM and then Chicago State at 5:30 PM in Port Charlotte, Fla.
