PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the University of Maine baseball team past St. Louis on Sunday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla. A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) was impressive on the mound for teh Black Bears to pick up the victory. Maine improves to 6-6 on the season, while St. Louis dips to 7-4.
St. Louis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but would get nothing the rest of the game.
Maine struck for all six of its runs in the top of the seventh inning. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) walked and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) doubled driving him home. Doran moved to third on a wild pitch and Eric White (Brewer, Maine) reached when he drew a walk. Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to center field and Doran scored. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) reached on a fielder's choice and White moved to third base. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled and White scored. Gay followed with a double, plating Black and Balzano. Gay scored the sixth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Bazdanes went 6.1 innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out five batters in the game. He improves to 2-1 on the season. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) replaced Bazdanes and did not surrender a hit in 2.2 innings.
James Norwood was one four St. Louis pitchers. He went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He falls to 0-2 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Tuesday, March 5 when it travels to the University of Miami. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
