PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team defeated Chicago State 13-7 on Sunday afternoon in Punta Gorda, Fla. It was the second straight win for the Black Bears, who improve to 8-10 on the season.
Chicago State tied the game in the fourth inning when Eric O'Brien doubled and then stole home.
Maine scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled and then stole second base. He scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) doubed. Balzano scored the second run of the inning when Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled.
The Black Bears added five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled and then stole second. Whitten followed with a walk. Doran scored when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) reached on an error. Bussey singled plating Whitten. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Bussey scored when Fransoso reached on a fielder's choice. Balzano scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch and Fransoso scored on an error.
Maine added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Doran doubled and scored on a Whitten single. Whitten and Salcedo, who singled, scored when Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) hit a two-run single.
Maine added two more runs in the top of the eighth. Brenden Geary walked and moved to third on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) doubled. Geary scored when Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) grounded out. Calbick scored when Whitten doubled.
Chicago State added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and five in the bottom of the ninth to make it a 13-7 final.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) went six inning for the Black Bears on the mound and got the win. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out nine. He improves to 1-1 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Manny Pupo (Boynton Beach, Fla.) allowed six runs in 1.2 innings. Whitten retired the final batter of the game for the Black Bears.

After an off day on Monday, the Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 12 when they travel to Florida Atlantic.
