Baseball Sweeps Albany in Doubleheader

The University of Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from Albany on Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears won the first game 4-1 and took the nightcap 7-4. Maine improves to 15-13 on the season and 6-2 in America East play. Albany falls to 7-13 overall, 3-5 in conference play.

 

In the first game, Maine took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Black Bears loaded the bases with nobody out. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled to left field and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) drew a walk. Eric White (Brewer, Maine) laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Calbick scored on a wild pitch. Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to right field driving home Doran with the second run of the inning.

 

Albany got on the board in the top of the third inning. Matt Hinchy doubled and scored when Gordon Madej hit a sacrifice fly.

 

Maine got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) walked and then stole second and third base. He scored when Calbick hit a sacrifice fly.

 

Maine extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. White single to center field and scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled to left field.

 

Tommy Lawrence (West Hartford, Conn.) got the start for Maine and again was impressive. He allowed one run on seven hits while striking out five. He improves to 4-2 on the season.

 

Cameron Sorgie got the start for Albany. He went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out three batters and falls to 1-2. Andrew Jaurique replaced Sorgie. He pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning.

 

In the second game, Albany took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Josh Nethaway doubled to left field and scored when Jeff Welsh singled.

 

Maine tied the game in the bottom of the frame. White singled and scored when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) reached on a fielder's choice.

 

Albany regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Madej singled and scored when Evan Harasta reached on an error.

 

Maine took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Doran led off the inning with a single and moved to third when White doubled. He scored when Connolly grounded out. White scored when Black singled to left field.

 

Maine added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Black singled to right field and Balzano reached on an error. Calbick was hit to load the bases. Doran followed with a two-run single playing Black and Balzano.

 

Albany pulled to within two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Nolan Gaige reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Nethaway singled. Madej scored the second run of the inning when Harasta singled.

 

Maine added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. White singled to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice by Connolly. Black followed with a single. White scored when Balzano singled up the middle. Black scored when Fransoso singled

 

AJ Bazdanes went 7.2 innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits. He stuck out four and improves to 3-3 on the season. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) pitched the final 1.1 to earn the save.

 

Kasceim Graham went seven inning and allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on 11 hits. He falls to 3-3.

 

The two teams finish their three game America East weekend series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 PM.
