ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears won the first game 5-2 and took the second game 3-2.
Maine improves to 17-14 on the season and 8-3 in America East play. Binghamton falls to 14-11 on the season and 5-6 in conference play.
In the first game, Binghamton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Zach Blanden led off the game with a triple to center field and scored when Jake Thomas singled to left field. The Bearcats extended their lead in the top of the second inning. Shaun McGraw hit an infield single and moved to second base on an error. He scored when Blanden singled to right field.
Maine plated five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) led off the inning with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) and scored on a passed ball. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled to right field and was pinch run for by Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.). Eric White (Brewer, Maine) followed with a single to right center. Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to center field driving home Bernardo with the tying run. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled through the right side driving in White with the go ahead run. Connolly and Black both scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) hit a two-run double to right field.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) pitched the complete game for the Black Bears. He allowed two runs, just one of which was earned, on seven hits. He struck out seven batters in the game and improves to 5-2 on the season.
Jake Lambert went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits. He struck out three batters and falls to 3-1 on the season. Mike Kaufman retired the final batter for the Bearcats.
In the second game, Binghamton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Blanden singled and Jake Thomas followed with a home run over the right field fence.
Maine took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Calbick doubled to deep center field and scored when Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled to center. Connolly singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw. Troy Black then doubled down the left field line driving in Doran with the tying run and Connolly with what turned out to be the winning run.
A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) went seven innings on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four. Bazdanes did not allow a walk in the game and improves to 4-3 on the season.
Jack Rogalla made the start for Binghamton and went six innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. He falls to 2-2 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Tuesday, April 9 when it hosts Thomas College at 5 PM at Mahaney Diamond.
