Late Comeback Leads Baseball Past UMBC 10-6 for Series Sweep
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Maine baseball team scored 10 runs in the final four inning to overcome a 5-0 deficit and defeat the UMBC Retrievers 10-7 on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The Black Bears sweep the three-game weekend series with the victory and improve to 21-14 on the season and 11-3 in America East play. UMBC falls to 8-18 overall, 4-11 in conference play.
After three scoreless innings, UMBC plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jake Barnes led off the inning with a home run to left field. Brandon Coluccio singled to shortstop and then moved to second base when Jason Allinder grounded out. Ian Glassman and Tom Gilchrist both singled through the left side. Coluccio scored on the single by Gilchrist. Anthony Gratto doubled down the left field line scoring both Glassman and Gilchrist. The Retrievers added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Barnes singled to third base and scored when Allinder singled to left.
The Black Bears pulled to within one run in the seventh inning. With two outs, Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) doubled down the left field line. Eric White (Brewer, Maine singled to center field scoring Salcedo. Connolly then singled to shortstop. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) drove home both runners with a single to left field.
The Black Bears took their first lead of the day with three more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.), Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) all drew walks to load the bases. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) reached on an error and both Gay and Calbick scored. Doran scored the third run of the inning on a White sacrifice fly.
The Black Bears continued to add to their lead with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Balzano singled up the middle and Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) followed with a single to left. Gay reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third. Calbick then doubled to right center field scoring both runners. Calbick scored the third run of the inning when Doran doubled to make it 10-5.
UMBC added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 10-7 final. Vince Corbi singled to shortstop and Barnes doubled down the left field line. Corbi scored when Coluccio singled to left. Barnes scored on an Allinder sacrifice.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start on the hill for the Black Bears and went four innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. He was replaced by Connolly who went 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs, just two of which were earned, on nine hits. Connolly improves to 4-2 on the season. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) retired the final two batters to pick up his second save.
Mike Gomez went 6.2 inning and allowed four runs on six hits. Kevin Ladner replaced Gomez. He allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on one hit. He suffers the loss and falls to 1-1. Cam Maxey pitched the final 1.2 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 16 when they host Colby at 4 pm at Mahaney Diamond.
