Baseball Wins Seventh Straight with Victory over Colby
ORONO, Maine – Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) had a two-out RBI hit in the bottom of the ninth inning and Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) followed with a bunt single that drove in the game-winning run as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Colby 9-8 on Tuesday night at Mahaney Diamond. With the win, the Black Bears extend their winning streak to seven games. Maine improves to 22-14 on the season, while Colby falls to 7-12.
Colby took a 3-0 in the top of the second inning. Tim Corey singled and Andrew Currier followed with a double. Corey scored when Benjamin Crocker singled to left field. Currier scored when Tyler Starks reached on a fielder's choice. Starks scored the third run of the inning when Nathan Ellis singled to center field.
Maine got a run back in the bottom of the second inning. Eric White singled and scored on an error.
The White Mules added five runs in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 8-1. Corey reached on a fielder's choice. Currier reached on an error and then advanced to second base. Corey moved to third on the play. Zachary Ellenthal reached on a fielder's choice and Corey scored on the play. Benjamin Crocker walked to load the bases. Starks drew a bases loaded walk to drive home Currier. Ellis then singled to left field scoring Ellenthal and Crocker. Starks scored the fifth run of the inning when Alec Finigan doubled to center.
Maine scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull to within four runs. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled to right field and Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) followed with a double. Doran scored when reigning America East Player of the Week Eric White (Brewer, Maine) singled. Silva scored when the Black Bears hit into a double play. Black followed with a home run over the right field fence. For Black, it was his first home run of the season.
The Black Bears pulled to within one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) led off the inning and drew a walk. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to left. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled to center and advanced on an error. Balzano and Gay both scored on the play. Fransoso stole third base and then scored when Doran reached on an error.
In the bottom of the ninth, Doran singled to right field. White followed with a single through the right side and Doran advanced to second base. Connolly then doubled driving home Doran with the game tying run. With White on third base, Black laid down a perfect but which allowed the winning run to score.
Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) went two innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa,) allowed five runs, none of which were earned, in two thirds of an inning. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) allowed just two hits over three innings. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) did not allow a hit in the final two innings. He picks up the win and improves to 2-0 on the season.
Mark Nelson went six innings for Colby. He allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits. Greg Ladd replaced Nelson. He allowed two runs on four hits over 2.2 innings. He falls to 2-1 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when it hosts defending America East champion Stony Brook for a doubleheader starting at 2 PM.
