ALBANY, N.Y. – Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) had three hits to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 7-3 win over Albany in the series finale between the two teams on Sunday afternoon. Maine improves to 29-18 on the season and 16-7 in America East play. Albany falls to 21-19-1 overall, 14-10 in conference action.
Maine scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) led off the inning with a single through the left side. He stole second and advanced to third on an error. Fransoso singled up the middle, driving home Balzano. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) also singled up the middle and Fransoso advanced to third. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Eric White (Brewer, Maine) singled through the right side and Calbick advanced to third. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled through the left side, scoring Calbick. White scored the fourth run of the inning when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) singled.
Maine added a run in the top of the third inning. Heath doubled and scored when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled.
Albany got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. D.J. Hoagboon walked, advanced a pair of bases on wild pitches and scored when Nolan Gaige singled up the middle. The hit in the fifth inning by the Great Danes was the first off Maine starter Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.).
Albany got a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Josh Nethaway reached on a fielder's choice and Brian Bullard walked. Nethaway scored when Matt Hinchy drew a bases loaded walk. Bullard scored the second run of the inning when Craig Lepre grounded out.
Fran Whitten hit his third home run of the week in the top of the eighth inning as Maine extended its lead to 6-3. Black then reached on a bunt single and scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled through the left side.
Mike Connolly got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed three runs on three hits over six innings. He struck out four batters in the game. He improves to 5-3 on the season. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) replaced Connolly. He went two innings and allowed just one hit. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Black Bears.
Stephen Carey got the start for Albany and allowed four runs on six hits in one inning. Derek Zielinski replaced Carey and went 6.1 innings in relief.
He allowed two runs on five hits. Andrew Jaurique allowed one run in a third of an inning. Ryan Stinar pitched the final 1.1 innings.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, May 11 when it travels to Binghamton for an America East series. The first game on Saturday starts at noon.
