Late Comeback Lifts UMBC Past Baseball on Senior Day
ORONO, Maine – UMBC scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and beat the University of Maine baseball team 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. Maine falls to 34-20 on the season and 20-9 in America East play. UMBC improves to 18-30 overall, 9-21 in conference action.
UMBC struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Mark Esposito singled and Rob McCabe walked Esposito scored when Jake Barnes singled. McCabe scored the second run of the inning when Kevin LaChance singled.
Maine answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on an error. Eric White (Brewer, Maine) walked to load the bases. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) drove home Black with a single to right field. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled up the middle plating Connolly. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field.
UMBC got a run back in the top of the fifth inning. Esposito reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error.
UMBC scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead. Esposito singled to center field McCabe singled up the middle. LaChance walked to load the bases. Jesse Smith singled to shortstop and Esposito scored. Anthony Gatto drove home the tying and eventual winning run with a single to right center field.
Maine threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs, Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine), doubled down the left field line, but he was stranded there.
Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) got the start for the Black Bears and went six innings. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits He struck out three batters. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) struck out four batters in two innings. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Maine) allowed two runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits in two thirds of an inning. He falls to 9-3 on the season.
Mac Gill got the start for UMBC and went seven innings. He allowed four runs, just one of which was earned, on 10 hits. Jon Cohn pitched the final two innings to earn the victory. He allowed one run on three hits and improves to 4-4 on the season.
Maine, the top seed in the 2013 America East Tournament, returns to action on Wednesday, May 22 when it faces Stony Brook in game one.
