ORONO, Maine -- Maine might be in the midst of a snowstorm, but the University of Maine baseball team opens the 2014 season this evening at #13 Miami. First pitch is slated to 7 PM from Mark Light Field in Coral Gables, Fla.
2013 America East and ECAC Pitcher of the Year Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) is expected to get the nod on the hill for the Black Bears. Lawrence finished with a school-record 11 wins last season. He was 11-3 with a 2.32 ERA. He struck out 78 batters in a team-high 104.2 innings pitched. He is expected to face Chris Diaz tonight.
Maine returns a veteran group of field players. Among those are Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) who hit .363 last season with 31 runs scored and 24 RBI. He stole 13 bases and was a Second Team America East selection. Also returning is outfielder Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) who was named to the America East Second Team as well. Doran hit .312 with 32 runs scored and 23 RBI. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) was also named to the America East Second Team. He hit .299 and led the team in stolen bases with 21. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) hit .280 and belted a team-best 20 doubles. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) finished with a .279 batting average with 25 RBI, while Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) batted .259 with 18 stolen bases.
Maine head coach Steve Trimper, the reigning America East Coach of the Year, is in his ninth season with the Black Bears. He is assisted by associate head coach Jason Spaulding and assistant coaches Nick Derba and J.P. Pyne.
