Maine Falls to Iowa 13-12

ORONO, Maine --- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 13-12 decision to Iowa in the second game of the Stetson Invitational. Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) belted a grand slam in the second inning for the Black Bears, while Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) finished with four hits in the game. 

Maine opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Gay led off the game with a double to center field and scored on a balk. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario), who singled through the left side, scored when Silva singled. 

Maine extended its lead to 7-0 in the top of the second inning on a Silva grand slam. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled and Jake Osborne (Burlington, Ontario) followed with a single as well Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice. Calbick scored when Gay singled. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled to load the bases, before Silva cleared them. 

Iowa got three runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a two-run single by Eric Toole. Tyler Peyton doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to make it a 7-4 game. 

Iowa took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Trevor Kenyon. 

Maine tied the game in the top of the sixth inning with a run. Salcedo singled to center and scored on a Black sacrifice fly. 

Iowa extended its lead to 11-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs. Maine took the lead back with four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) led off the inning with a single to left and Lucien Della Fera (Colts Neck, N.J.) ran for him. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled and Calbick walked to load the bases. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on an error and DellaFera scored. Bussey scored when Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) grounded out. Skylar Mercado (Bronx, N.Y.), who pinch ran, scored when Gay singled. Balzano scored the fourth run of the inning when Black singled.

Iowa scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the 13-12 victory.

Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) was one of five Maine pitchers in the game. He surrendered two runs on five hits over an inning to suffer the loss. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario), Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.), Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) and Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) also saw action on the mound in the game for the Black Bears. 

Blake Hickman picked up the win in relief for Iowa.

Maine returns to action on Sunday, March 2 when it faces host Stetson at 3 PM.
