PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) belted a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and the University of Maine baseball team scored the lone run in the 10th as it defeated Northeastern 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla. Silva led the Black Bear offense with a pair of hits and four RBI.
Maine improves to 3-7 on the season with the win, while Northeastern falls to 3-6.
Northeastern struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Connor Lyons singled to third base and scored when Joey Scambia doubled to right field. The Huskies added a run in the bottom of the third inning to push its lead to 2-0 after a Brad Burcroff home run.
Maine tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.). Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) doubled to left field scoring Bussey. Gay, who advanced to third when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) grounded out, scored when Silva singled up the middle.
The Huskies took the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Connor Lyons doubled to left field and Nick Fanneron walked. Scambia then walked to load the bases. Gabe Levanti singled through the left side driving in Lyons. Fanneron scored the second run of the frame when Josh Treff his a sacrifice fly. Northeastern added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lyons led off the inning with a triple and scored when Mike Piscopo singled up the middle.
Maine headed to the top of the ninth inning trailing 5-2. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) led off the inning and drew a walk. Maine's next two batters recorded outs, before Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled through the right side to keep the game alive. Silva followed and belted his second home run of the season, tying the game at 5-5.
Northeastern threatened in the bottom of the ninth by loading the bases, but the Black Bears escaped the inning without allowing the winning run. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) led off the top of the 10th inning and reached on an error. Bussey followed and reached on a fielder's choice. Bussey moved to second base when Patrick Coughlin (Cambridge, Ontario) grounded out. Bussey scored the winning run when Gay reached on an error.
Maine retired the Huskies in order in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn the 6-5 win.
Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) got the start on the mound for Maine and went 3.1 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) went 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) pitched two innings in relief and allowed one run on four hits. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) pitched the final two innings without surrendering a run to earn the victory. He improves to 1-0 on the season. He struck out three batters.
Dustin Hunt got the start for Northeastern and went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Isaac Lippert went 2.1 innings and allowed a pair of hits. Michael Foster allowed three runs over two innings. Mike Fitzgerald pitched the final innings and suffered the loss.
Maine continues its Florida swing with a game against Lehigh scheduled for Wednesday, March 5. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
