PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped an 11-4 decision to Lehigh on Wednesday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Black Bears got home runs from Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) and Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) in the game.
Maine falls to 3-8 on the season, while Lehigh improves to 3-5.
Lehigh jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Maine tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when Calbick belted his first home run of the season.
Lehigh responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame. Connor Faust had a two-run single to center field in the inning for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh added run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Maine scored a run in the top of the seventh inning when Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) doubled and scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled. Maine was able to get no closer, however, as the Mountain Hawks added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Maine capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning. Salcedo homered to left field. Rookies Lucien DellaFera (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Jake Osborne (Burlington, Ontario) recorded back-to-back singles. DellaFera scored the second run of the inning when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled.
Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) got the start for the Black Bears and went 4.1 innings. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits. He struck out six batters in the game. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.), Steve Trask (Saco, Maine), Joe Kinee (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) all saw time on the mound for the Black Bears.
Kevin Long went six innings for Lehigh to earn the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits and improves to 2-0. Nick Cassell pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
Maine has Thursday off, before facing Western Michigan on Friday at 2:30 PM in Port Charlotte, Fla.
