Baseball Drops Game to Western Michigan
The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Western Michigan on Friday afternoon. Maine threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning and was able to push across a run.
Maine falls to 3-9 on the season, while Western Michigan improves to 6-7.
Western Michigan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Grant Miller was hit-by-a-pitch, moved to third when Kurt Hoekstra doubled. He scored when Jared Kujawa grounded out. The Broncos added a run in the run in the top of the second inning to extend their lead to 2-0. Steve Buglione singled through the right side and scored when Vinnnie Booker doubled down the left field line.
Western Michigan added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Miller walked and Hoekstra followed with a double down the right field line. Both runners scored when Brett Sunde singled to center field.
Maine got its lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a single through the left side. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) singled to load the bases. Black scored Maine's lone run on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) sacrifice fly.
Black and Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) each had a pair of hits in the game for the Black Bears.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out six. He falls to 0-4 on the season. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) replaced Lawrence. Coughlin pitched a scoreless inning and was replaced by Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.), who pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Chad Mayle got the start for Western Michigan and pitched six scoreless innings, giving up eight hits. Derek Schneider went 1.2 innings and surrendered just one hit. Gabe Berman pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save. He allowed one run on three hits.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, March 8. The Black Bears face Presbyterian at 12 noon and South Dakota State at 3 PM.
