Baseball Drops Pair of Games in Florida
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla. Maine fell to Presbyterian 12-5, before dropping a 5-3 decision to South Dakota State.
Presbyterian took a 2-0 lead after two innings of play, after scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Maine got a run in the bottom of the third inning when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) led off the inning with a hit and scored when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled.
Presbyterian scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 8-1. The Blue Hose added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Maine countered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Black singled and scored on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) sacrifice fly. Presbyterian, however, scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 12-2.
Maine scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Skylar Mercado (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled and Mercado advanced to second base. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) reached on an error and Mercado scored. Pat Coughlin (Cambridge, Ontario) followed with a two-run double plating both Bussey and Geary.
Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed six runs, just two of which were earned, on four hits over 3.1 innings. He falls to 0-1 on the season. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) went 5.2 innings in relief and allowed six runs, just two of which were earned, on seven this.
Chandler Knox went six innings for Presbyterian to earn the win. He improves to 3-1 on the season.
In the second game of the day, South Dakota jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Eric Danforth had a two-run single in the inning for the Jackrabbits.
South Dakota added two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Al Robbins, who led off the inning with a single, scored on an error. Danforth, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a sacrifice fly.
Maine score a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Black doubled and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) followed with a double of his own, driving in Black. Doran scored when Silva singled.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start for the Black Bears on the mound. He went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) went one inning and surrendered a pair of hits. Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Miane0 went two third of an inning and allowed two runs, neither of which was earned. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) did not allow a hit in the final 1.1 innings.
Chris Anderson pitched seven innings for South Dakota State to earn the win.
Maine falls to 3-11 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, March 9 when it faces South Dakota State once again. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM.
