Calbick and Gelinas Lead Baseball Past Florida Atlantic 3-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Florida Atlantic University on Tuesday night in Boca Raton, Fla. 

Maine improves to 5-11 on the season with the win, while Florida Atlantic falls to 11-6. 

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Skylar Mercado (Bronx, N.Y.) and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) led off the inning with back-to-back hits. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) loaded the bases when he reached on a bunt single. Mercado scored the first run of the game whenCalbick singled. 

Florida Atlantic tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brendon Sanger singled up the middle and scored when Tyler Rocklein singled through the right side. 

Maine answered back in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) and Calbick had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Both runners advanced a base with a sacrifice bunt by Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine). Doran scored on a wild pitch and Calbick scored when Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) reached on an error. 

The Owls added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within a run. Levi Meyer walked and scored on an error. FAU could get no closer and Maine earned the 3-2 victory. 

Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) went five innings on the mound to earn his first collegiate victory. He allowed two runs, just one of which was earned, on five hits while striking out three. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) pitched a pair of scoreless innings. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) pitched the final two innings in relief to earn the save, his team-leading third of the season. 

Sean Labsan got the start for the Owls and went five innings on the mound. He surrendered one run on four hits. Brett Maggard replaced Labsan and allowed two runs to suffer the loss. He falls to 0-1 on the season. 

Maine and Florida Atlantic conclude their two-game series on Wednesday, March 12. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
