BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 15-6 decision to Florida Atlantic University on Wednesday evening in Boca Raton, Fla. Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) led the Maine offense as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. CJ Chatham had a bases loaded two-run single in the inning. FAU extended its lead to 7-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Maine put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on an error and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) followed with a double driving in Balzano. Troy Black (Misissauga, Ontario) singled and Gay advanced to third base. Gay scored the second run of the frame on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) sacrifice fly. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) then tripled down the right field line and Black scored.
FAU answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to extend its lead to 10-3. Chatham led off the inning with a home run. Billy Endris doubled to right center and Brendon Sanger followed with a double driving Endris home. Sanger scored on a sacrifice fly by Ricky Santiago.
Maine scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) led off the inning with a double to left center. Jonathan Salcedo singled driving home Heath. Skylar Mercado (Bronx, N.Y) drew a walk, before Balzano doubled to left field scoring both runners home.
The Owls, however, answered back in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run by Santiago. FAU added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 15-6 final.
The Black Bears used five pitchers in the loss. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) suffered the loss as he surrendered five runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning. He falls to 0-2 on the season. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits over 1.2 innings. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) allowed one run on a pair of hits over 1.2 innings. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) allowed two runs on three hits over 2.1 innings. Joe Kinee (Philadelphia, Pa.) allowed a pair of runs on three hits over one inning.
Brandon Rhodes allowed three runs, none of which were earned, on six hits over five innings to earn the win. He improves to 2-0. He was one of four pitchers in the game for the Owls.
Maine returns to action on Friday, March 14 when it faces Northwestern in Winter Haven, Fla.
