Gay Leads Baseball Past Northwestern 8-4
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) had four hits and scored a pair of runs as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Northwestern 8-4 on Friday afternoon in Winter Haven, Fla. Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) earned the win on the mound for the Black Bears.
Maine scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) walked and stole second base. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a single, while Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) was hit to load the bases. Calbick scored when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) grounded out. Heath scored when Patrick Coughlin (Cambridge, Ontario) grounded out. Doran scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Northwestern tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Matt Hopfner singled to right field and Zach Jones followed with a single through the right side. Joe Hoscheit singled to left field and advanced on an error, scoring Hopfner. Jones scored when Jack Livingston singled. Hoscheit scored the third run of the inning when Evan Schieber singled.
Maine answered back with a run in the fourth. Heath and Doran had back-to-back singles. Busseydoubled to left center field playing Heath. The Black Bears extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Gay doubled to center field and scored when Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) singled.
Maine added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 7-3. Bussey walked and Skylar Mercado (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to shortstop. Bussey scored when Gay doubled down the left field line. Mercado scored when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled to second base.
Northwestern added a run in the bottom of the frame when Nick Linne singled and scored when Hopfner grounded out.
Maine capped the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Gay singled and scored on an error.
Lawrence went six innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits. He improves to 1-4 on the season. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) pitched the final three innings to earn his second save. He allowed just three hits.
Reed Mason went 5.2 innings for Northwestern. He allowed seven runs on 11 hits and falls to 0-2.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, March 15 when they play a doubleheader. The Black Bears face Bowling Green at 10 AM and Evansville at 2 PM.
