The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 9-7 decision to Evansville on Saturday afternoon in Auburndale, Fla. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) had three hits for the Black Bears, while five others chipped in with two hits.
Maine falls to 7-13 on the season with the loss, while Evansville improves to 8-6.
Maine opened the game scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) and Calbick had back-to-back hits. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled and Adam scored. Calbick scored on an error on the play. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) then singled, driving in Heath.
Evansville got on the board in the top of the second inning. Kyle Pollock doubled and scored when Boomer Synek singled. Evansville added another run in the top of the fourth when Eric McKibban singled and scored when Devin Williams had an RBI double.
Maine added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and scored on an Adam double.
Evansville answered right back. Jonathan Ramon doubled and scored when Synek doubled. They tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Jarod Perry singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch.
Evansville added four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take an 8-4 lead. The inning was highlighted by a three-run double by Josh Jyawook.
Maine added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull to within one run. Brian Doran tripled and scored on a Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) single. Jonathan Salcedo singled and Bussey advanced to second base. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) followed with a single to load the bases. Black singled driving home Bussey. Salcedo scored the third run of the inning on an Adam sacrifice fly.
Evansville added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Pollock singled and scored on a Synek sacrifice fly.
Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) went four innings on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed two runs on five hits. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) replaced Morrill and allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on four hits. He suffers the loss and falls to 1-1. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) allowed two runs in two thirds of an inning. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) pitched the final inning and allowed a run.
Brent Jureeka went 2.2 innings in relief to earn the win for Evansville. Sam Johns earned the save.
