Troy Black and Shaun Coughlin Lead Baseball Past Bowling Green 14-5
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 14-5 win over Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon. Maine improves to 7-12 with the win, while BGSU falls to 6-12.
Maine jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) doubled and Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) followed with a double driving him in. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) walked. Both runners advanced a base on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) sacrifice. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a two-run triple scoring both Black and Adam. Heath scored the fourth run of the inning when Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) had a sacrifice fly.
Maine added three runs in the top of the second inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) walked. Gay followed with a single to center and Balzano moved to second base. Black singled and moved to second on an error. Gay and Balzano both scored on the play for the Black Bears. Black scored when Calbick singled.
The Black Bears added three more runs in the top of the sixth. Jonathan Salcedo (Porvidence, R.I.) singled and scored on a Gay hit. Black followed with a single and both runners scored on a hit by Calbick.
Bowling Green got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brandon Howard doubled and scored when Alex Davison singled.
Maine continued to add to its lead in the top of the seventh inning. Brian Doran singled to left and Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) was hit. Salcedo singled to load the bases. Doran scored when Balzano had an infield single. Bussey scored on a wild pitch. Balzano and Salcedo each scored when Black reached on an error.
The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the eighth when Howard singled and scored when Jeremy Shay singled to center field. Bowling Green added three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a three-run triple by Howard.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start on the mound for Maine. He went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits en route to his first win of the season. Coughlin struck out six batters in the game. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) allowed one run on two hits over one inning. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) allowed three runs in the ninth.
Mike Frank went just 1.1 innings for Bowling Green and allowed seven runs, six of which were earned, on five hits. He falls to 0-3 on the season.
Maine will face Evansville at 2 PM this afternoon.
