Baseball Downs UMaine Farmington 10-1 in Mahaney Diamond Opener
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team defeated UMaine Farmington 10-1 on Thursday afternoon in its Mahaney Diamond opener for the 2014 season. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) each had a pair of hits in the game for the Black Bears.
Maine improves to 9-16 on the season, while UMaine Farmington falls to 3-11.
Maine struck first, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) and Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) were each hit to load the bases. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) drew a walk forcing home Gay with the first run of the inning. Black scored on a Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) sacrifice fly. Heath scored the third run of the inning on a balk and Calbick scored an a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.).
Black scored his second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. He reached on an error and scored when Doran grounded out. Maine added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bussey walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Salcedo was hit and Balzano bunted to load the bases. Bussey scored when Gay hit a sacrifice fly. Salcedo scored when Black singled to center field.
UMaine Farmington scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Ben Keene reached on an error. Tom Grady, who finished the game with three htis, followed with a single. Keene scored when Grayson Beressi singled to center field.
Maine added two more runs in the fourth inning. Doran singled and Jake Osborne (Burlington, Ontario) pinch ran for him. Osborne stole second base and scored when Bussey singled. Bussey scored the second run of the frame when Balzano singled to left field.
Maine added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 10-1 final. Balzano reached on an error and scored when Black grounded out.
Maine used six pitchers in the game. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start and struck out four in two innings. He earns the win and improves to 2-2 on the season. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) allowed one unearned run in two innings on two hits. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) went two scoreless innings, striking out two. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) struck out two in an inning of work. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning fanning one batter. Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) pitched the ninth inning for the Black Bears.
Ben Pearson got the start for UMaine Farmington and picked up the loss for the Beavers. He surrendered four runs in the outing. He was one of seven UMaine Farmington pitchers used in the game.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 5 when it hosts Hartford for an America East doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.
