The University of Maine baseball team hosts Hartford this weekend for a three-game America East series. The series for this weekend was altered due to the weather and the two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday and a single game Monday starting at 3 PM. The Black Bears enter the series with a record of 9-16, 1-2 in America East play. Hartford is 13-10 overall, 3-2 in conference action.


SCOUTING THE MAINE BLACK BEARS: Maine is led by Troy Black, who is hitting .374 on the season with 16 runs scored and 15 RBI. He has five doubles to go along with six stolen bases. Colin Gay has a .356 average with 17 runs scored and 12 RBI. He leads the team in double with 12. Scott Heath is batting .350 with six runs scored and five RBI. He has seven doubles and one triple on the season. Sam Balzano has a .320 average with 14 runs scored and six RBI. He also has six stolen bases. Brian Doran is hitting .319 with 11 runs scored and 11 RBI. He has six doubles and a pair of triples. Alex Calbick is batting .270 with 11 runs scored and 13 RBI. He has four doubles and a home run. Steven Adam has a .268 average with four runs scored and seven RBI. Jonathan Salcedo is hitting .264 with 11 runs scored and four RBI. He has 14 RBI.

Shaun Coughlin is 2-2 on the season with a 3.62 ERA. Tommy Lawrence is 2-4 with a 4.95 ERA. He leads the team in strikeouts with 38 on the season. Scott Heath is 2-2 on the season with a 5.52 ERA. He recorded a victory over #13 Miami earlier this year. Lawrence and Heath have each started six games on the season. Charlie Butler, Jeff Gelinas and Logan Fullmer each also have a victory on the season. Butler leads the team in appearances with 11.  


MAINE COACHING STAFF IN 2014: Maine head coach Steve Trimper (Eastern Connecticut State University '92) is in his ninth season at the helm of the Black Bears. He has an overall record of 422-390-4 in his 15th season as a head coach. He has a record of 250-216-2 with the Black Bears. Trimper won his 400th game at Maine on Saturday, April 20, 2013 against Stony Brook. He is assisted by Jason Spaulding (Vermont '00), Nick Derba (Manhattan '07) and J.P. Pyne (St. Joseph's '01).  


CAPTAIN OF THE BLACK BEARS: The Black Bears have four captains this season. Troy Black, Alex Calbick, Colin Gay and Tommy Lawrence will all serve as captains this season.  


SCOUTING THE HARTFORD HAWKS: SCOUTING THE HARTFORD HAWKS: Hartford is 13-10 on the season and 3-2 in America East play. The Hawks are led by Ryan Lukach who is hitting .294 with 14 runs scored and 11 RBI. He has two doubles, a triple and a home run to go along with five stolen bases. Brady Sheetz is hitting .277 with 14 runs scored and 11 RBI. He has four doubles and a pair of triples on the season. Chris DelDebbio is chipping in with a .261 average with 12 runs scored and nine RBI. James Alfonso is batting .259 with nine runs scored and a team-high 14 RBI. He has four doubles and a pair of home runs. 

 he pitching staff is led by Sean Newcomb, who leads the nation with a 0.00 ERA. He is 3-1 and has struck out 46 batters in 39.2 innings. Sam McKay is also 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA. Kyle Gauthier is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Alex Gouin is 1-1 in relief with a 0.57 ERA. 

 artford is coached by Justin Blood (Franklin Pierce '05) who is in his third season. He is assisted by Steve Malinowski, Mike Nemeth and John Slusarz. 


MAINE AND HARTFORD: Maine and Hartford have met 114 times with the Black Bears holding an 86-28 in the all-time series. The two teams split the six games last year, with each team winning three. Hartford has won the last two games in the series. 


LOOKING TO DEFEND: Maine won the 2013 America East Regular Season title. The Black Bears look to defend their title this season.


WHAT RETURNS: Maine returns 16 letterwinners from the 2013 season. Among the 19 letterwinners are six starters. 


LAWRENCE SINGLE SEASON WINS LEADER AT MAINE: Tommy Lawrence set the school record last year for wins in a season with 11. He broke the previous record of 10 wins, set multiple time 


LAWRENCE BREAKS AMERICA EAST RECORD: Last season, pitcher Tommy Lawrence broke the America East record for wins in a season on May 4 with his 8-6 victory over Albany. Lawrence improved to a perfect 8-0 in league play. His eight wins broke the record of seven league victories set in 1994 by Delaware's Jeremy Benson.


FAMILY TIES: Nick Bernardos' father Rick Bernardo played for the Black Bears from 1983-86 and was a first team All-American. 


KEEPING IT LOCAL:  Maine currently has six players from the state of Maine on its roster. 


BLACK BEARS HONORED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: Thirteen baseball players were honored as Maine Scholar-Athletes. Jeff Gelinas, Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes, Joe Kinee, Jake Osborne and Sam Stauble each earned a 3.0 or better in their first semester at the University of Maine. Alex Calbick, Burk FitzPatrick, Logan Fullmer, Brenden Geary and Jonathan Salcedo each earned a Bronze Medal. Nick Bernardo and Brian Doran earned Silver Medals, while Colin Gay earned a Gold Medal.
