ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team defeated Thomas College 10-2 on Tuesday night at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. Nick Bernardo (Glenmont N.Y.) and Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) each tripled in the game for the Black Bears.
Maine took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) led off the inning and drew a walk. Bernardo followed with a triple to the left field fence. Bernardo scored the second run of the inning when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled to center field. Bussey scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to left field.
Thomas got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Ross Sanders singled to left field and scored when Anree Benitez drew a bases loaded walk.
Maine added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Black led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a wild pitch. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) walked and Brian Doran was hit. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Calbick scored the second run of the inning on a balk. Doran scored when Jake Osborne (Burlington, Ontario) singled to center field.
Thomas scored a run in the top of the sixth inning. Ethan Henderson singled to right field and scored when Nik Beeson drew a bases loaded walks.
Maine added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) reached on an error and scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine capped the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 10-2 final. Calbick walked and Doran was hit. Calbick scored on a wild pitch. Doran scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on an error.
Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) got the start and went 3.2 innings. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out four. Fuller picked up the win and improves to 2-1 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) replaced Fullmer. He went 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) went two innings and allowed one run. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) pitched the final two innings. He did not allow a hit while fanning three.
Dylan McNally picks up the loss for Thomas and falls to 0-2. He allowed four runs on six hits. Tyler Keller went one inning and allowed two runs. Mike Confer went 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on just one hit. Rob Casarez recorded the final out.
Maine improves to 10-19 on the season, while Thomas falls to 4-12.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 12 when it travels to UMass Lowell for an America East series. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12 noon.
