Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At UMass Lowell
LOWELL, Mass. -- The University of Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from UMass Lowell on Saturday winning the first game 5-4 and taking the second game 3-2 in nine innings. The Black Bears improve to 12-19 on the season with the wins and 3-5 in America East play. UMass Lowell falls to 10-12 overall, 3-4 in America East action.
In the first game, Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled to center field and advanced to third when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) reached on an error. Balzano scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario). Gay scored the second run of the inning when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) doubled to right center. Calbick scored when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled.
UMass Lowell got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Joe Consolmagno reached on an error and scored when Matthew Sanchez tripled. Sanchez pulled the River Hawks to within one run when he scored on a fielder's choice.
Maine added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning. Heath singled and Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) followed with a double. Heath scored on a Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) sacrifice fly. Bernardo scored when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled to right field.
The River Hawks got a pair in the bottom of the eighth to pull to within one run once again. Jacob O'Keefe doubled to center field and Greg Wilson walked. Louis Tarantino pinch ran for Wilson. Both runners scored when Consolmagno doubled.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) went 7.2 innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on 10 hits. He struck out nine batters and improved to 3-4 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) went the final 1.1 innings to earn his fourth save of the season.
Shane Beauchemin went seven innings for UMass Lowell and allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on 10 hits. He falls to 2-3. Jordan Del Sol pitched the final two innings.
In the second game, Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bernardo doubled to center field and scored when Black followed with a double to right. The Black Bears extended their lead to 2-0 when Heath doubled and scored when Salcedo singled to right field.
UML tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ian Strom singled to right field and scored on a wild pitch. O'Keefe, who singled to left field, scored when Consolmagno singled to center field.
Maine took the lead in the top of the ninth innings. The Black Bear rally began with two outs when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.), who had made a game-saving play to end the eighth inning, singled to left. Salcedo drew a walk and Gay advanced to second base. Gay scored when Bussey singled to center field.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start and went five innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) went two innings and allowed just two hits. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Black Bears to earn the win. He improves to 1-0 on the season. Butler recorded the final three outs to earn his fifth save of the season.
Matt Calzetta went 6.1 innings for the River Hawks and allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out four batters. Thulani Denaro went 2.1 innings in relief and allowed a run. He falls to 2-1 on the season. Nick Boutoures recorded the final out for the River Hawks.
The Black Bears look for the series sweep when the two teams play a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM from LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
