LOWELL, Mass. – Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) and Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) combined to four-hit UMass Lowell as the University of Maine baseball team defeated the River Hawks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep. Maine improves to 13-19 on the season and 4-5 in America East play. UMass Lowell falls to 10-13 on the season and 3-5 in conference action. The victory extends Maine's winning streak to four games.
For the third time in three games over the weekend, Maine jumped out to an early lead. Heath led off the second inning and was hit. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) followed and singled up the middle. Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) was also hit to load the bases. Heath scored when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I) hit a sacrifice fly. Calbick scored the second run of the inning when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) singled up the middle.
UMass Lowell answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Joe Consolmagno walked and scored when Joe O'Keefe grounded out.
The Black Bears received an impressive pitching performance on the day for Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) and Heath. Gelinas got the start and went six innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He improves to 2-2 on the season. Heath pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
Chrisitian Lavoie went eight innings for the River Hawks and allowed two runs on five hits. He falls to 0-2 on the season. Ian Strom pitched the ninth and allowed just one hit.
Maine returns to action on Tuesday, April 15 when they host Colby at 4 PM.
