Lawrence and Coughlin Each Pitch Complete Game Shutouts As Maine Sweeps NYIT

ORONO, Maine -- Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) and Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) each threw complete game shutouts as the University of Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from NYIT on Friday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The Black Bears won each game 1-0.

Lawrence struck out a career-high 14 batters in the game, while Coughlin tied his career-high by fanning nine batters.

Maine improves to 16-22 on the season with the doubleheader sweep.

In the first game, Maine scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) led off the inning with a single to shortstop. Black advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) and scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled to center field.

Lawrence did the rest, recoding his second straight complete game shutout. He allowed just five hits while fanning the 14 batters. The 14 strikeouts were just three shy of the school record for strikeouts in a game, albeit Lawrence recorded his 14 strikeouts in a seven inning game. He improves to 5-4 on the season.

John Duggan allowed one run on three hits for NYIT. He struck out three and falls to 0-6 on the season.

The second game was similar to the first as the pitchers once again stole the show. Maine scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Bernardo (Albany, N.Y.) drew a walk and scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) doubled to the left field fence.

Coughlin allowed just three hits while striking out nine. He improves to 3-4 on the season. J.P. Lipovac allowed one run on four hits for NYIT. He falls to 0-6 on the season. NYIT dips to 3-35 on the season.

The two teams played a doubleheader on Friday, due to rain predicted for Saturday. The two teams return to action on Saturday, April 26 with a single game scheduled to start at 1 PM.
