Doran and Gay Lead Baseball Past NYIT 11-4

ORONO, Maine -- Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) belted three doubles, while Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) scored three runs as the University of Maine baseball team defeated NYIT 11-4 on Saturday afternoon at a damp Mahaney Diamond. 

Maine improves to 17-22 on the season, while NYIT falls to 3-36. 

Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Saturday, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Doran doubled to left field, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled to left field. 

NYIT scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Frank Sanamore singled to left field and Joshua Canabal followed and drew a walk. The runners then pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third. Sanamore scored on a Louis Mele sacrifice fly. Canabal scored the second run of the inning when Matt DiBiase singled to left field. 

Maine tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled to right field, stole second and scored when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled to right field. 

Maine broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gay and Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) both walked. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) reached on an error to load the bases. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) followed with a single to center field plating both Gay and Salcedo. Black and Doran both reached on fielder's choices to load the bases once again. Bussey scored when Calbick singled to left field. Black scored the fourth run of the inning when Heath was hit with the bases loaded. 

The Black Bears extended their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gay reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Bussey singled. 

NYIT got the run back in the top of the eighth inning. Canabal tripled and scored on an error on the play. 

Maine plated four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Heath walked and Lucien DellaFera (Colts Neck, N.J.) pinch ran for him. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) singled to right field and DellaFera moved to third. Gay followed with a single to left field scoring DellaFera. Salcedo drew a base on balls to load the bases. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) followed with a single driving home Geary. Gay scored on a Black sacrifice fly. Salcedo scored when Doran belted his third double of the game. 

The NYIT Bears made it an 11-4 final when Laurent Polenght reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning. 

Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out six batters and improves to 3-3 on the season. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) went 2.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on a pair of hits. Make Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) closed out the game retiring the final two batters. He allowed a run on one hit. 

Jake Axley got the start for NYIT and allowed four runs on six hits. He falls to 0-3 on the season. Michael Auriemmo allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits. James Moussa allowed one run on two hits in an inning. Anthony Merchan surrendered four runs on four hits in two thirds of an inning. Matthew Busch retired the final batter of the game for the Bears. 

The two teams finish their four game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
