ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped the series finale to NYIT on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) had a pair of hits for the Black Bears in the contest.
Maine falls to 17-23 on the season with the loss.
NYIT opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. Louis Mele singled up the middle and scored on a wild pitch. The Bears added to their lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Thomas Joannou walked and scored when Mele doubled to right center field.
Maine pulled to within one run in the bottom of the third inning. Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) singled to left field and scored when Jake Osborne (Burlington, Ontario) singled down the left field line.
Maine tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. He scored on an Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) sacrifice fly.
NYIT scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning. Nick Sebastian singled to right field and scored when Mele reached on an error.
The Black Bears threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning. Kyle Silva (Fall River, Mass.) drew a walk and Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) pinch ran for him. Balzano advanced to second on a Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) singled to the right side and Balzano moved to third base. NYIT brought in Elias Martinez who retired the final Maine batter with the tying run at third base.
Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) got the start for Maine and went 4.2 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five batters. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) replaced Morrill on the mound and went the final 4.1 innings. He surrendered one unearned run on four hits to suffer the loss. He falls to 1-4 on the season.
David Plotkin went 8.2 innings for the NYIT Bears and allowed two runs on eight hits. He improves to 1-5 on the season. Elias Martinez retired the final Maine batter to record the save.
Maine return to action on Tuesday, April 29 when it hosts UMPI at 5 PM at Mahaney Diamond.
