Black Bears Blank Owls 12-0
ORONO, Maine -- Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI as the University of Maine baseball team defeated UMPI 12-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Orono, Maine. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) belted a two-run home run in the victory for the Black Bears.
Maine improves to 18-23 on the season with the win.
Maine took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) and Brian Doran had back-to-back hits. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) reached on an error to load the bases. Black scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) hit a sacrifice fly. Doran scored the second run of the inning on a Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) single.
Maine added three more in the second inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) walked, stole second base and scored when Doran doubled. Heath followed with a home run over the right field fence for the Black Bears, giving Maine a 5-0 lead.
Maine added four runs in the bottom of the third. Gay doubled and scored when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) doubled to left. Balzano then walked and stole second base. Bussey scored when Black reached on an error. Balzano and Black both scored when Doran singled to left field.
Maine added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Calbick and Nick Bernardo (Albany, N.Y.) led off the inning with back-to-back hits. Calbick scored when Patrick Coughlin (Cambridge, Ontario) singled to center field. Bernardo scored when Bussey grounded out and Coughlin scored when Balzano reached on an error.
Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) went five innings to earn the victory for Maine. He allowed three hits while striking out seven. He improves to 3-1 on the season. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) went one inning and allowed two hits while striking out a pair. Chris Piteo (Middle Village, N.Y.) allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh inning. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) went pitched the final two innings for the Black Bears striking out a pair.
Dylan Worster got the start for UMPI and allowed nine runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits. He struck out three batters and falls to 0-6 on the season. Jordan Perry allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits. Lucas Molloy went one inning and allowed two hits. Ghazaleh Sailors pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Isaiah Straubel pitched the eighth inning for the Owls and allowed two hits.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, May 3 when it travels to Stony Brook for an America East series with the Seawolves. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM. Maine's game against Manhattan, originally scheduled for May 1, has been canceled.
