SANFORD, Maine – Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) drove in four runs while Nick Bernardo (Albany, New York) scored four to lead the University of Maine baseball team past Boston College 12-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Sanford, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 22-26 on the season with the win, while Boston College falls to 20-31.
Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Troy Black (Mississauga Ontario) led off the second inning with a double down the right field line and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) followed and drew a walk. Nick Bernardo (Albany, N.Y.) was hit to load the bases. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) doubled down the right field line scoring both Black and Doran. Bernardo scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice. Morrill scored the fourth run of the inning when Colin Gay (Franklin, Massachusetts) singled to center field. Gay scored the fifth run of the inning when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled to center field.
BC answered back with two runs in the top of the third inning. Nick Sciortino singled and scored when Blake Butera reached on an error. Butera scored the second run of the inning when Joe Cronin had an infield single.
Maine put up three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Doran was hit and Bernardo singled to right field. Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, Rhode Island) singled to center field scoring Doran. Morrill drew a walk to load the bases. Balzano reached on an error and Bernardo scored. Salcedo scored the third run of the inning when Gay hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Black tripled to right center field and Bernardo followed and drew a walk. Bernardo stole second base. Salcedo walked to load the bases. Morrill followed with a single to right field driving home Black and Bernardo.
Black Butera doubled and scored on a Chris Shaw sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning.
Maine added a run in the bottom of the sixth innings. Bernardo singled and scored when Balzano singled to left field. The Black Bears added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Balzano and Gay had back-to-back singles. Balzano scored when Heath double to right field.
Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Massachusetts) got the start for the Black Bears and went two innings. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) went six innings in relief and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits. He struck out a pair en route to the win. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Black Bears.
Justin Dunn went two innings and allowed five runs on four hits over two innings. He falls to 1-1 on the season. Steve Green replaced Dunn and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on two hits. Nick Poore went one inning and allowed two runs on two hits. Bobby Skogsbergh pitched the fifth inning for the Eagles. Tyler Hinchcliffe allowed one unearned run on three hits. Luke Fernanadez allowed a pair of hits in one innings. Michael Strem pitched the final inning for the Eagles.
Maine returns to action on Friday, May 16 when it hosts UMBC at 4 PM at Mahaney Diamond.
