Trask Brilliant But Baseball Falls on Senior Day 2-1 in 12 Innings

ORONO, Maine -- Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) pitched 11.2 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, however, the University of Maine baseball team dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 in 12 innings to UMBC on Senior Day. 

Maine falls to 24-27 on the season and 10-11 in America East play. UMBC improves to 17-29 overall, 7-17 in conference play. 

Trask took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Rob McCabe singled to right field and Kevin Lachance followed with a RBI double to left field, scoring McCabe from first base. 

Maine tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kyle Silva (Fall River, Massachusetts) reached on an error and Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) pinch ran for him. Balzano moved to third base when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, Rhode Island) grounded out. Colin Gay (Franklin, Massachusetts) then singled to center field, scoring Balzano to knot the score at 1-1. 

It remained a 1-1 game until the top of the 12th inning. Jake Barnes doubled to left field and scored when D.J. Smith singled to center field with what would be the game-winning run. 

Trask went 11.2 innings on the mound for the Black Bears, allowing just two runs on seven hits. He struck out four batters in the game and falls to 0-1 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Massachusetts) got the final out in the top of the 12th inning. 

Joe Vanderplas went nine innings on the mound for the Retrievers. He allowed one unearned run on five hits while striking out five. Denis Mikush went three innings to earn the victory. He allowed just one hit and improves to 2-3 on the season. 

Before the game, Maine honors its eight seniors: Nick Bernardo (Albany, New York), Steve Trask (Saco, Maine), Colin Gay (Franklin, Massachusetts), Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario), Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Connecticut), Kyle Silva (Fall River, Massachusetts), Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) and Tommy Lawrence (New Haven, Connecticut).
